Margaret Susan Graves Johnson, 95, of Ormond Beach, passed away April 16, 2016. She was the daughter of Pellie Green Graves, MD and Elmina Towe, born in Scottsville, KY, July 1, 1920. In 1941, she graduated from the University of Louisville and later married the love of her life, Charles Franklin Johnson who predeceased her in 1990. Kentucky Governor, Albert Benjamin Chandler, commissioned Margaret as a Kentucky Colonel in 1956. Before moving to this area in 1960, Margaret and Charles lived in Charleston, SC and Mobile, AL where their children were born. Margaret believed in giving back to her community , was very active and devoted to helping others. She was a former Volusia County School District Substitute Teacher and a former volunteer at both the Cornelia Young and Ormond Beach libraries. Her memberships were many including: Chi Omega Sorority, Daytona Beach Area Panhellinic serving as President in 1969, executive board member of the Daytona Beach Friends of the Library, Daytona Beach Palmetto Club, Daytona Beach Symphony Guild, Friday Musicale, Abigail Bartholomew Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Senior Advisor for Daytona Beach Children of the American Revolution, Ormond Beach Memorial Gardens, Ormond Beach Historical Society, St. James Episcopal Church and was a honorary life member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary –partially due to her help in securing the funds to build the original Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach. She was a supporter of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch, the Halifax Humane Society and the Salvation Army. Margaret cherished her Kentucky roots and was a member of the Allen County Kentucky Historical Society. In 2001 the United States Department of the Interior included her childhood home in the National Register of Historic Places. The home is now the Allen County Kentucky Historical Society Museum. In lieu of other remembrances the family suggests donations be made in Margaret’s memory to either the Salvation Army or Halifax Humane Society. Survivors include 4 daughters, Margaret Susan Johnson, Ajijic, Jalisco Mexico, Charla Johnson, Ormond Beach, Melissa Paro, Daytona Beach and Julie Johnson, Ormond Beach; 2 grandchildren, Aaron Paro, South Daytona and Margaret Johnson of Daytona Beach. Graveside Service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday May 10, 2016 at Crescent Hill Cemetery.
