OBITUARY
DARLENE HATTIE BALLARD
Formerly of Union
1922 – 2016
Darlene Hattie Ballard, 93, formerly of Union, died April 21 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Baker City. A graveside service at Union Cemetery will be held at a later date. Darlene was born July 21, 1922, to Alfred Gray and Edith May Pratt. She attended school through her junior year of high school in Ericson, Nebraska, then moved with the rest of her family to Union. It was there that Darlene met and married Meade Ballard. At Meade’s passing they had been married 63 years. Darlene birthed and raised five children. Much on her own during World War II, she managed Dixie and Connie while Meade served in the Navy. Deforest (Tork), Sue and Louann followed. Her family says Darlene was a hard-working woman. Besides raising her children and taking care of the home, she was an avid gardener and filled countless canning jars with her garden crops. For a couple years, Darlene and Meade ran the Cove Tavern. Darlene lived in Union for approximately 65 years, relocating to Baker City only after her husband passed away. She enjoyed gathering mushrooms, picking huckleberries and camping. Many afternoons you could find Darlene embroiled in a cutthroat round of pinochle with a daily beer. She had uncanny luck drawing 300 pinochle. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Meade, and daughter, Louann. Memorial donations may be made to the Union High School Bobcat Foundation through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.O. Box 543, Halfway 97834. Online condolences may be shared.
