US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Mitchell enlisted into the US Army on September 14, 1866, in New York, NY. He was described as 5'6", blue eyes, brown hair with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was boatman. On September 29, 1866, Mitchell was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Riley, KS. During his enlistment Mitchell was assigned to escort duty for Gen Sully and as quartermaster teamster. When Mitchell's enlistment expired, on September 14, 1871, in Bagdad, KY, he reenlisted back into Company I. He was married to Catherine Agnes Clemens. They had three children, Anna, Catherine and Charles. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company I was assigned to LTC George A Custer's battalion, but Mitchell was assigned to Major Marcus Reno's battalion, as Reno's cook. During the fighting, Reno used Mitchell as a courier to carry a message to Custer. After the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Mitchell's body was found on Last Stand Hill with Custer's command. His remains were likely buried where they had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
