Original Burial Site of US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Records list Corporal Meyer's place of birth as Prussia, Germany. He enlisted into the US Army on September 27, 1873, in New York, NY. He was described as 5'8", light hair, blue eyes with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was bartender. On October 18, 1873, Meyer was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. Company E was known as the Gray Horse Troop, because of the gray horses they rode. Meyer was assigned as company cook. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company E was assigned to LTC George A. Custer's battalion. Meyer was killed at the battle. After the battle his friend, Pvt Frank Berwald, reported finding Meyer's body near Deep Ravine. It is likely that Meyer was buried, where he had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
