Pvt McIlhargey was born in Antrim Ireland. He enlisted into the US Army on November 19, 1867. He was described as 5-5, black hair, brown eyes & dark complexion.

On November 19, 1872, after re-enlisting, he was assigned to Company I, 7th US Calvary. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh.

McIlhargey was married to a Josephine. They had two children, Archibald F & Rosalie.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, McIlhargey was assigned as Maj Reno's striker. When the Maj Reno's battalion began their attack, Reno sent McIlhargey as a courier to Custer's battalion. He carried the first message from Reno to Custer reporting that the "Indians" were in front of him (Reno) in strength.

After the battle, McIlhargey's body was found on Last Stand Hill. He was buried, where he had fallen.

In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
