Pvt McGue enlisted into the US Army on December 23, 1872 in Troy NY. He was described as 5-4, black hair, brown eyes, & dark complexion. His civilian occupation was laborer.

On February 11, 1873, he was assigned to Comppany L, 7th US Cavalry at New Orlens LA. Company L was commanded by LTC Custer's brother-in-law, Lt James Calhoun.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company L was assigned to Custer's battalion.

Mc Gue was killed during the battle. His body was never positively identified. After the battle most of Company L was found on what became known as Calhoun Ridge. A few bodies from Comppany L were also found near Capt Keogh's last postion & on Last Stand Hill.

It is likely McGue's unidentified remains were buried where they had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield remains were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
