Pvt McGinnis (also spelled McGinniss) enlisted into the US Army on December 2, 1874 in Boston MA. He was described as 5-8, grey eyes, sandy hair with a florid complexion. His civilian occupation was lithographer.

On February 10, 1875, he was assigned to Company G, 7th US Cavalry at Shreveport LA.

Listed as detained in the Shreveport civil jail for violation of unknown city ordinance between August 12-17, 1875. On August 28, 1875 he was sentanced at a general court martial five months confinement for Shreveport incident on August 28, 1875.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company G was assigned to Maj Reno's battalion. McGinnis was believed to have killed at the beginning of the retreat from the valley (in a wooded area) to the what became known as Reno's Bluffs. McGinnis was last seen attempting to mount his horse. The horse bolted without McGinnis.

After the battle, McGinnis' head was reportedly found in either the abandoned Cheyenne or Lakota villages. The rest of his body was not found.

It is likely McGinnis' unidentified body was buried where it had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
