Pvt Maxwell enlisted into the US Army on December 27, 1872 at St Louis MO. He was described as 5-5, blue eyes, brown hair with a ruddy complexion. His listed civilain occupation was laborer.

On February 11, 1873, he was assigned to Company L 7th US Cavalry at New Orleans LA. Company L was commanded by LTC Custer's brother-in-law, Lt James Calhoun.

During the Summer of 1874, Maxwell participated in the Black Hills Expedition.

Between November 25, 1875 & January 8, 1876, Maxwell was in the post hosptial for "acute dysentery."

Maxwell and Company L were assigned to Custer's battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was killed during the battle, & his remains were never identified.

After the battle most of Company L was found on Calhoun Ridge and in the area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill.

Maxwell, as well as most of the soldiers killed during the battle, were first buried where they had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burialls were reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
