Grace Amundson, 99, of Stanley, died Saturday, April 30 at Mountrail Bethel Home. Her funeral will be Wednesday, April 4, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Knife River Lutheran Church, rural Stanley, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.
Grace was born April 6, 1917, at Palermo, ND, to Gilbert and Annie Mahlum. She grew up in Palermo and graduated from high school there. She attended Minot State College where she received her teaching degree. She taught grade school in several different schools in this area. Grace married Manfred Amundson December 22, 1942 and they farmed and lived south of Stanley until 1962 when they moved to town. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling and spent many enjoyable winters in Apache Junction, AZ.
After her husband died in 2000, Grace volunteered through the RSVP program at Stanley. She had several hobbies and made many quilts for family, friends, and the church. She started knitting when she could no longer quilt and made around 300 sweaters for needy children worldwide through the Knit for Kids Project. She was a lifelong member of Knife River Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.
We were truly blessed to have such an amazing woman as a mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt and friend. Grace was known by everyone for her friendly smile and was a happy person who never complained and always saw the positive side. She showed us, by her example, how to grow old gracefully and with humor. She will be greatly missed.
Grace is survived by: daughters: Marlys (Rupert) Schreiner of Trego, MT, Dianne (Ed) Moen of Plaza ND, and Arnetta (Don) Hodgman of Billings MT; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; extended family members, Bryan and April Bacor and family; sister, Martha Snyder, Apache Junction, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Manfred; 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
