Corporal Martin was born in Kildare County Ireland. He enlisted into the US Army on February 6, 1872 at Chicago Ill. He was described as 5-5, gray eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as laborer.

On February 26, 1872, he was assigned to Company G, 7th US Cavalry at Spartanburg SC. His daily duties were listed as "Charge of Company Kitchen."

Martin was with Maj Reno's battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was reportedly killed during the Valley Fight.

After the battle, it was reported that the head of a corporal from Company G was found under a kettle in the abandoned Lakota Village. The head was believed to have belonged to Martin.

Soldiers killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn were first buried where they were found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
