Pvt Mahoney enlisted into the US Army at Boston MA on October 29, 1872. He was described as 5'10", hazel eyes, dark hair with a sallow complexion. His listed civilian occupation was teamster.

On December 9, 1872, Mahoney reported for duty at Yorkville SC & was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry. Company L was commanded by Lt James Calhoun. Lt Calhoun was the brother-in-law of LTC George Armstrong Custer & Capt Tom Custer. Mahoney's daily duties were pioneer.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company L was assigned to LTC Custer's battalion. Mahoney was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company L was found on what became known as Calhoun Hill & Calhoun Ridge.

Mahoney's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
