Pvt Lorentz was born in Holstein Germany. He enlisted into the US Army on November 13, 1872, at St Louis MO. He was described as 5'6", gray eyes, dark brown hair & a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was painter.

On December 9, 1872, he was assigned to Company M, 7th US Cavalry at Unionville SC. His daily duties were listed as hospital cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company M was assigned to Maj Marcus Reno's battalion.

Lorentz was reportedly killed during the Valley Fight from gunshot wounds to his neck & back.

After the battle Lorentz was likely first buried where he had died. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
