Born in Pearl River N.Y. His early days were spent in Spring Valley and Nyack N.Y. During the Civil War he was a private on Company D, 95th Infantry, New York volunteers and served through the conflict. He was taken prisoner by confederate forces but escaped from the prison camp by posing as an Englishman. He was a member of Hackensack Court of Foresters No. 47, and a member of the Westwood N.J. G.A.R. post. Carpenter.
