Pvt Lewis first enlisted into the U.S. Army at Carlisle PA for five years on December 11, 1867. He was described as 5'5' tall, gray eyes, brown hair and fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as laborer.

He reported for duty at Fort Leavenworth KS on January 18, 1868. He was assigned to Company C, 7th U.S. Cavalry.
When Lewis' enlistment expired on December 11, 1872, he reenlisted. Lewis' daily duties were listed as company cook and bugler.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company C was commanded by Lt Henry Harrington and attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Sometime during the battle Lewis was killed.

After the battle 15 soldiers & two sergeants from Company C were found on what had been the flanks of Company L on Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill..

Lewis' body was not identified. It is likely that his remains were first buried where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
