Verna Marie Fuller was born April 14, 1941 on the farm near Byron, Nebraska to William and Christena (Marquart) Ritterling where she grew up with brothers Clarence Gebers and Arlen Ritterling.

Verna was baptized on May 4, 1941 at St. John Lutheran Church rural Byron and confirmed at St. John’s on June 20, 1954. Verna attended grade school in the country school near her home and graduated from Byron High School with the Class of 1959.

She student taught for a year following her senior year. She went on to take a job caring for the St. Paul minister’s children. From there she began working at the Deshler Broom factory.

She met Gary Fuller and married him on August 14, 1960. Verna and Gary moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he worked construction and Verna worked at King Food Host restaurant as a waitress. Shortly thereafter, they moved back to Hardy, Nebraska where Ranae was born on June 21, 1961. They soon moved to the farm southeast of Deshler, Nebraska. On March 20, 1963 Wesley was born and Gary was raising dairy cows at this time. Julie was born April 22, 1965 on Gary’s birthday. They also had a milk truck route at this time. Verna was a crucial part of the farming operation as she helped with all aspects from raising animals to running tractors, hauling grain to town, and raising hogs, cattle, sheep, and chickens. On May 24, 1972, Kevin was born. Verna took a job as a Nurse’s Aide and passed her CNA test with ease.

She also served on the church council at St. Peter Lutheran. Verna enjoyed reading daily. She also sewed, crafted needle point and embroidering and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed gardening and canning, helping her husband and sons move equipment from farm to farm, and even helped Arlen after suffering his stroke. Verna always took time to visit those in the nursing homes, to draw, reading and writing poetry and even song writing. She received a trophy for a song she wrote entitled “The Family Farm” which was recorded by Keith Bradford in 1998. Before October of 2005 when Verna suffered her stroke, she was the principal caregiver for her husband Gary who had Parkinson’s disease. Following her stroke, he became one of her caregivers. On April 26, 2008 Verna was blessed with daughter-in-law Denise and grandson Lane. In June of 2008 Julie adopted Davin to make two grandchildren. On December 16, 2008 Bailey became Verna’s first granddaughter. Kevin and Denise the proud parents then blessed her with her 3rd grandson November 11, 2009, Kobe. Unfortunately Verna’s husband of 49 years, Gary, passed away on December 25, 2009. Until the time of her passing, Saturday, April 30, 2016, she enjoyed all the family times. Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gary; brothers Clarence Gebers and Arlen Ritterling.

She will be forever remembered by her children and grandchildren; many other relatives; and a host of friends.

Due to injuries sustained December, 2015 at a nursing home, her life was cut short at the age of 75 years and 16 days. She will be surely missed until we see her again.
