Carl Kenneth Hersey was the son of William and Lila Hersey. He graduated Bowdoin College and received a research fellowship from Harvard from which he received his Phd. In 1947 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Humanities. Prof Hersey taught at the University of Rochester (NY) for 34 years prior to his retirement in 1968. He lectured at Columbia University and was a consultant to the New York Council on the Arts. His speciality was medieval architecture and he was the author of several books on the subject and often gave lectures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After returning to Maine he continued to lecture and contribute to local historical societies. Locals to his ancestor's Pembroke Maine where he spent his last years will remember him as the author of their sesquicentennial History of Pembroke. He and his wife Frances, (born 3.24.1904 in Springfield IL) were the parents of a daughter Constance. Fanny died in Machias Maine May 9, 1991 and is buried beside her husband.
