Winifred Evelyn Garvey was born to Adeline Belle (Eggleston) Little and Aaron James Little in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 21, 1925.
Winifred passed away on April 27, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 91.
Winnie was graduated from Wauwatosa High School in 1943 and earned her Bachelor of Arts from Whitewater State Teachers College in Commercial Education in 1947. After graduation from college, she ventured as a civil servant to Guam where she taught English Language Arts to United States troops. There she met a dashing and dedicated United States Army Lieutenant, Daniel Joseph Garvey, from the Bronx, New York City, New York. They were reassigned to Yokohama, Japan, where they married on October 6, 1950. Winnie was a proud and devoted officer's wife during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After the birth of her two children and her husband's medical retirement at Ft. Bliss, Texas, she resumed her teaching career, while also assuming homemaker and caregiver responsibilities. Winnie taught English Language Arts with the Ysleta Independent Schools in El Paso, Texas, for 35 years and taught at Ascarate and Ramona Elementary Schools and Riverside and Eastwood High Schools. Winnie led a productive, challenging, joyful, and inspiring life, including (but not eclipsed by) an arduous journey with Alzheimer's.
Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, U.S. Army Captain (Ret.) Daniel Joseph Garvey in 1996, her son, Daniel Joseph Garvey II in 2004, her brother, Allan James Little and sister-in-law, Eleanore Jane (Clarke) Little and her sister, Genevieve Lorraine (Little) Kloman.
Winnie is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jean Garvey, of Albuquerque, NM, brother-in-law, Edward J. Kloman, of Columbus, Ohio and five nephews and their wonderful families, Kent Kloman of Columbus, Karl Kloman of Columbus, Jeffrey Little of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Brian Little of Baraboo, Wisconsin and James A. Garvey III of Scardsdale, New York.
Winifred has been cremated and private services will take place at the Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, New Mexico, where her ashes will be interred with her husband.
