Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 26th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel and Additional Aide-de-Camp on the staffs of Major General Joseph Hooker and Major General George Gordon Meade, both of whom had commanded the Union's Army of the Potomac. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Gettysburg, Pa".
