DR. L. M.THACKER DIES SUDDENLY
Was one of Leading Physicians of Tis Sction
No dire calamity that has ever befallen this community has resulted in so great a shock to our people as the death of Dr L. M. Thacker, which occurred at his home on Main Street last Friday morning at 12:30. His demise was all the more shocking for the reason that it came so suddenly and unexpectedly. He had seemingly been in the best of health, (perhaps barring in slight suffering from some teeth, which he had had pulled a few days previous) and it could hardly be believed by his host of friends(unreadable) was flashed "Dr. Thacker (unreadable) On the day before his demise Dr Thacker had been active in answering calls from his patients in his ever cheerful manner, and no one could conceive that death was so near upon him. On Thursday night he retired (unreadable) a slight pain in his chest. His devoted (unreadable) him administered (unreadable) remedies to relieve his seemingly slight ailments. not realizing that the (unreadable)( was so near at hand. A few moments before he breathed his last. He arose from his bed and took a tablet to relieve his suffering and only a few moments elapsed after returning to his bed, when suddenly he threw up his hands and the end had come. An alarm was sounded and every effort was made by physicians to restore him but to no avail. Dr. Thacker was born, February 26th, 1857 in Jonesborough, Nelson county, Virginia, being the son of Johnson Hugh Thacker and Jane Alberta Thacker. In 1889 he graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and in the same year came to Hamlin where he engaged in the practice of medicine building up a practice that was unexcelled by any member of his profession in this section of the state. No matter under what circumstances Dr Thacker was always ready and willing to go the instant called upon to relieve the suffering of his fellowman and through his demise the people of Lincoln county lose a great physician and friend. He was the gentlest of hearts, the truest of natures, the highest of spirits, that feels and considers the weaknesses of human nature and who does not let small things stand in the way of his generous friendship and affection for those with whom he was thrown. And so, in the midst of a career that hd been so indispensable in every way among our people and just ambitions and just powers to yet longlife of great usefulness he disappears from among us--not dead--promoted, leaving us to mourn, not his departure for his sake, but that he value of his conspicuous example, the strength of his conspicccuous experience in his profession and our counsels and the wisdom of his counsels have been withdrawn. In 1891 he married to Miss Carrie May Curry daughter of Mr and Mrs B. F. Curry of this city, to which union two children were born, one daughter and a son Alberta and Leslie. His domestic life was an exquisite idyl. It was fraught with faith and tenderness. It was a poem whose rhythm was never marred. Our hearts go out in sympathy to the lonely woman who was his helpmeet all the days while he was with us. Hers the desolation of a great loss, but with it the consolation of a great love, Peace be with her. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. R. W. Smith of Louisville, Ky.; one son, Leslie E Thacker of this city and one brother Charles Thacker of Kokomo, Ind. Funeral services were conducted at the home in this city Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Revs. Lambert and Slaughter officiating in the presence of one of the largest funeral gatherings ever assembled in Lincoln county after which burial occured in Fairview cemetery
