Charles John Hall, 85 died Thursday, April 28, 2016, at home surrounded by his family. He was born September 5, 1930 in Maplewood, St. Louis County, Missouri, to John Peter Hall and Opal Marie (Jones) Hall.
Charles attended parochial grade school in Kirkwood, Missouri and graduated from Brentwood, Missouri High School on June 3, 1949. Upon graduation he went to work for Missouri Printing Company, St. Louis, Missouri as an apprentice lithographer. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Air Force and served from November 1, 1951 until he was discharged with honors on July 26, 1953 at the rank of Airman. Upon reentering civilian life, Charles went back to work in the printing business and traveled to Kansas City, MO and Wichita, KS with Hallmark Printing as a journeyman eventually being sent to Joplin, Missouri to work at the Joplin Globe Newspaper. In 1959, Charles became a stereotyper for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch where he worked until he retired in the late 1970's. In addition, he was a real estate broker and new home sales professional from the early 1960's to the late 1980's. Charles also served as a Sheriff's Deputy Reserve Officer in St. Charles County from 1964 until his retirement from law enforcement in 1984 at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Charles, also called Pete by his friends and family, was an avid fisherman who loved to fish for catfish and instilled in his sons the same passion for fishing and being outdoors. He loved to build wooden rabbit traps using a design that his father, John Peter, had taught him and which he had memorized.
Charles will be remembered by his friends and family for many wonderful things, but mostly because of his gentle, kind, and generous demeanor. His children's friends called him Dad or Charlie and he had a special gift of being able to connect with people from all walks of life.
Charles married Sammy Athula Whitehorn, of Diamond, Missouri on January 17, 1957 in Springfield, Missouri. Sammy preceded Charles in death on December 17, 2011. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Marie Hall, San Diego, CA, and Lynda Marie Hall, Phoenix, AZ; three sons, Charles John, Jr. and wife Kelly, Webb City, MO, Samuel John, Waynesville, MO, Timothy John, O'Fallon, MO; 17 grandchildren (two additional grandchildren who preceded him in death); 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ginny Smithberg, Springfield, MO.
Charles was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in St. Peters, MO from 1959 until his death.
Charles was lovingly and compassionately cared for by his son Tim, and his family during his final years. This selfless devotion will always be remembered with great affection and gratitude.
