Pvt Lehmann enlisted into the US Army on November 11, 1872 at New York, NY. He was described as 5'4", brown eyes, dark hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was confectioner.

On December 1, 1872, Lehmann reported for duty at Shelbyville KY & was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh. Lehmann's daily duties were listed as cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Lehmann was killed.

Two days after the battle most of Company I was found in the area between Calhoun Hill & Last Stand Hill.

Lehmann's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
