Pvt Knecht enlisted into the US Army on September 22, 1873, at St Louis MO. He was described as 5'6", hazel eyes, light brown hair & a light complexion. His listed occupation was butcher.

On October 18, 1873, Knecht reported for duty at Ft Lincoln in the Dakota Territory & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. His daliy duties were listed as cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Knecht was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company E was found in the area between the Little Bighorn River & Last Stand Hill.

Knecht was reportedly found near Deep Ravine at the base of Last Stand Hill. He was likely first buried where he had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

On September 14, 1877, his mother was awarded a survivior's pension.

Later battlefield excavations appear to support warrior accounts that Company E briefly conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action until they were overwhelmed & wiped out.
