Historical Figure. She was the first immigrant to be processed at Ellis Island, in 1892. On January 1 1892 Annie was the first one off the ship to set foot on American soil, Ellis Island. She was questioned personally by Charles M. Hendley from the Secretary of the Treasury's office, she was given a $10 gold piece for being the first person to be processed at Ellis Island. As an extra bonus, Annie realized it was her 15th birthday. She married German immigrant Joseph Augustus Schayer, an employee at Manhattan's Fulton Fish Market, with whom she had at least eleven children. She died of heart failure in 1923 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens. Her previously unmarked grave was identified in September 2006. A statue of Annie and her brothers stands on Ellis Island (which is now a museum). A similar statue can be found in Cobh, Ireland, where they began their voyage. Since then, over 17 million people have entered the United States through Ellis Island.
