Stella Kulik was the youngest of seven surviving children born to parents who had emigrated from Poland at the turn of the century, settling in Ipswich. Like her older brothers and sisters, she attended Ipswich schools and worked in the shoe industry before her marriage to Alphonse ‘Al’ Kulik in 1939.

Coming from such a large family, it’s not surprising that family was a major focus of Stella’s life. She was very close to all of her brothers and sisters and to her husband’s family. Many happy times were spent at family cookouts, Christmas parties and other get-togethers. As parents and siblings grew older or fell ill, she frequently assumed the role of caretaker. When siblings passed away she became the keeper of family history and tradition: filling in gaps in the family tree; sharing copies of old photographs; exhorting nieces, nephews and her daughter Jane to keep in touch and to be there for each other. In today’s world where people are so often self-centered and inward-looking, she constantly encouraged all of us --both through her words and through her actions -- to look outside the self and to love each other.

The special place in her heart, though, was for home and hearth: for her devoted husband Al and her daughter Jane. She didn’t care to travel to exotic places or collect things. Instead, a good time was reading a good book; working alongside Al as they tended their beautiful yard; or visiting her daughter. Material things were much less important to her than emotional and spiritual connections to the people that she loved.

Stella was a very wise woman -- not so much in the ways of the world as in the ways of the heart. She will be deeply missed by those of us who were touched by that wisdom:
her husband, daughter, and extended family and friends.
