1st Sgt Kenny enlisted into the army at Pittsburgh PA on January 15, 1867. He was described as 5-7, gray eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was roller.

On February 22, 1867, he was assigned to Company F, 5th US Artillery at Richmond VA. He was discharged at the expiration of his enlistment on January 15, 1870.

On March 7, 1871, he re-enlisted at Fort Leavenworth KS. He was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavlary. On June 1, 1874 he was promoted to 1st Sergeant of Company F.

Kenny was killed with Company F at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and buried where he fell. In 1881 all battlefield burials were re-buried in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

Kenny had re-enlisted in March of 1876, and was given a six month furlough with, "permission to cross the sea," upon his return from the expedition which ended tragically at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
