Pvt Kavanagh enlisted into the army at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, LA on January 16, 1873. He was described as 5-11, red hair, gray eyes with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was farmer. He was assigned to Company L, 7th Cavalry. Company L was commanded by Lt James Calhoun. Lt Calhoun was married to LTC George A Custer's sister.

On February 3, 1873, Kavanagh was promoted to corporal and assigned to post headquarters. On September 13, 1874, he was promoted to sergeant.

In April 1875, Kavanagh was arrested (unknown offense). A general court marital sentenced him to 6 months confinment, forfieture of $5.00 from his pay for five months and reduction in rank to private.

Kavanagh was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was with Company L. After the battle most of the company was found on a ridge that was later named Calhoun Ridge. Some other members of L Company were found in the area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. Kavanagh, as well as most of the soldiers killed during the battle, was reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill in 1881.
