On December 21, 1874, Huber enlisted into the US Army at Cincinnati OH. He was described as 5'7", light hair, gray eyes & a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was gunsmith.

On February 8, 1875, Huber reported for duty at Opelika AL & was assigned to E Company, 7th US Cavalry.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Huber was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company E was found in the area between between the Little Bighorn River & Last Stand Hill.

Later battlefield excavations appear to support warrior accounts that Company E had briefly conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action until they were overwhelmed & wiped out.

Huber's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
