Pvt Horn enlisted into the army at Richmond IN on November 15, 1872. He was described as 5'6", brown hair, hazel eyes & a florid complexion. His listed civilian occupation was laborer.

On December 2, 1872, Horn reported for duty at Shelbyville KY & was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh. His daily duties were "hospital nurse in the field."

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Horn was killed.

Two days after the battle, most of Company I was found in the area between Calhoun Hill & Last Stand Hill.

Horn's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
