Pvt Holcomb enlisted into the army at Cleveland OH on October 28, 1872. He was described as 5'6", black hair, black eyes & a dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was clerk.

On December 2, 1872, Holcomb reported for duty at Shelbyville KY & was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh. Holcomb's daily duties were cook. On December 24, 1874, he was promoted to corporal. On March 10, 1876, Holcomb requested that he be returned to the rank of private.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Holcomb was killed.

Two days after the battle most of Company I was found in an area between Calhoun Hill & Last Stand Hill.

Holcomb's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
