First Sgt Hohmeyer enlisted into the army at New York, NY on March 19, 1867. He was described as 5'7", light hair, gray eyes & a dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was gardener.

On March 25, 1867, Hohmeyer was assigned to Company B, 4th US Artillery at Ft Riley KS. His daily duties was company cartman. He completed his first enlistment on March 19, 1870.

On May 9, 1870, Hohmeyer reenlisted at St Louis MO. On June 26, 1870, Hohmeyer reported for duty at Ft Leavenworth KS & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. Company E was known as the Gray Horse Troop, because of the gray horses they rode.

Hohmeyer was promoted to corporal on July 1, 1871. On September 1, 1871 he was promoted to sergeant. On May 24, 1873, he was promoted to First Sergeant of Company E.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Hohmeyer was killed.

Two days after the battle most of Company E was found in the area between the Little Bighorn River & Last Stand Hill.

Hohmeyer's "terribly mutilated" body was identified from a sock with his name on it. He was found not too far from the river near several other Company E soldiers. He was reportedly first buried where he had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

Later battlefield excavations appear to support warrior accounts that Company E had briefly conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action towards Last Stand Hill, before they were overwhelmed & wiped out.

Hohmeyer was survived by a wife and four children. She was awarded a widow pension on November 1, 1878.
