Pvt Henderson enlisted into the army on December 3, 1867 at Ft Leavenworth KS. He was described as 5'8", brown hair, brown eyes & a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as laborer.

Henderson was assigned to E Company, 7th US Cavalry. E Company was known as the "Gray Horse Troop."

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Henderson was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company E was found in the area between the Little Bighorn River & Last Stand Hill.

Battlefield excavations appear to support warrior accounts that Company E had conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action until they were overwhelmed & wiped out.

One mystery about the battle has a burial detail reporting they buried 28 members of the company in Deep Ravine. Recent excavations have revealed no evidence of any burials or artifacts in the ravine.

Henderson's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
