Pvt Henderson enlisted into the US Army on August 22, 1870 in New York NY. He was described as 5'7", light hair, gray eyes & a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as farmer.

On December 3, 1870, Henderson reported for duty at Camp Verde in the Arizona Territory & was assigned to Company G, 3rd US Cavalry. His enlistment expired on August 22, 1875, at Ft Sidney NE.

On September 22, 1875, Henderson reenlisted in New York NY. On October 29, 1875, he reported for duty at Ft Totten in the Dakota Territory & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. E Company was known as the "Gray Horse Troop."

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Henderson died sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company E was found in the area between the Little Bighorn River & Last Stand Hill.

Battlefield excavations appear to support warrior acounts that Company E had conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action until they were overwhelmed & wiped out.

One battlefield mystery has burial parties reporting they buried 28 members of E Company somewhere in Deep Ravine. Recent excavations have revealed no evidence of any burials or artifacts in the ravine.

Henderson's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
