Helmer enlisted into the Army on March 14, 1867 in Brooklyn NY. He was described as 5-10, light hair, gray eyes & a light complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as clerk.

On April 22, 1867, Helmer reported for duty at Omaha NE & was assigned to Company I 4th US Infantry. When his enlistment ended in April 1869 at Ft Fetterman Wyoming Territory, Helmer reenlisted.

After his second enlistment expired on March 14, 1875, he reenlisted again on July 10, 1875 in Cinncinnati OH.

On April 27, 1876, Helmer reported for duty at St Paul MN & was assigned to Company K, 7th US Cavalry. He became the company bugler.

During the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company K fought on Reno Hill. Helmer was mortally wounded with a gunshot to his bowels late in the afternoon. Helmer, in extreme pain, begged his comrades to kill him. He eventually died from his wounds.

Helmer was likely first buried on Reno Hill. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
