Clarres was the daughter of Milam and Arena Compton Bennett. She was born the second of eight children. On Sept 7, 1919, at the age of 18, Clarres married 28 year old James Blaine "Jim" Garrett. He had just returned from WWI, serving in the Army as a Wagoneer. The newlyweds lived in Hiseville, Barren County, KY with Jim's brother and his wife, Ben and Sallie Bryant Garrett, during the Jan 2, 1920 Census. By April 30, 1930, Jim and Clarres had 5 children and were living/working on a farm in Barren County. They went on to have nine children in their union - James L., Jocie Pearl, Luther H., J. T. (died as an infant), twins Ernest L. and William B., Mary Francis, Benjamin H. and Cecil O. Clarres preceded her husband in death on Dec 27, 1965. She was laid to rest in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery on Dec 29, 1965.
