Pvt Hamilton enlisted into the U.S. Army on September 9, 1873 in New Orleans LA. He was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry. Company L was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun. Lt Calhoun's brother-in-laws were LTC George Armstrong Custer & Capt Tom Custer. Hamilton's civilian occupation was cook. Hamilton was described as having blue eyes, dark brown hair and 5'6".

On August 20, 1875, Hamilton was promoted to corporal. On April 8, 1876, he was demoted to private.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company L was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Hamilton was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company L was found in an area that later became known as Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Hamilton's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were removed to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
