Corporal Hagemann enlisted into the U.S. Army on October 2, 1873 in New York, NY. Prior to enlisting into the U.S. Army, Hagerman reportedly served three years with the German Army. He was described as having brown eyes, brown hair, fair complexion & 5'9". His civilian occupation was merchant.

On October 19, 1873, Hagemann reported for duty at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company G, 7th U.S. Cavalry.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, G Company was attached to Reno's Battalion. Hagemann was killed at the banks of the Little Bighorn River during Reno's chaotic retreat from the Valley Fight.

Two days after the battle burial details located Hagemann's "badly mutilated" body. It had been found where he had died. It is likley that Hagemann was first buried where he had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
