Pvt Gordon was born in Chatham England. He enlisted into the US Army on December 5, 1872 at Boston MA. He was described as 5'6", brown eyes, brown hair & fair complexion. Civilian occupation was laborer.

On February 9, 1873, Gordon reported for duty at Oxford MS & was assigned to Company M, 7th US Cavalry. His daily duties were cook.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company M was attached to Maj Marcus Reno's battalion. Gordon was killed from a volley of gunfire. Gordon had survived the retreat from the Valley Fight & was approximately half way up a ravine towards what was later called Reno's Bluffs, when he was shot in the neck. The same volley of fire also struck troopers Meyer, Morris & three horses.

After the battle it was reported that Gordon's body was found in an "awful state of mutilation." Gordon's was likely first buried where he had died. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
