He was described as 5'7", blue eyes, brown hair and dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was butcher, On October 19, 1873, Gilbert reported for duty at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. Company L was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun. Calhoun was the brother-in-law of LTC George A Custer and Captain Thomas Custer. On March 16, 1876, Gilbert was promoted to corporal. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company L was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Gilbert was killed during the fighting. Two days after the battle burial details found most of Company L on or near what became known as Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill. Gilbert's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill. Gilbert was survived by his wife, Mary E Hevener, and son, Rudy K.
