Pvt Galvan enlisted into the US Army on September 25, 1875 in Boston MA. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. Galvan was described as 5'6', gray eyes, dark hair with a dark complexion.

On October 29, 1875, Galvan reported for duty at Ft Totten, Dakota Territory & was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry. L Company was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun. Lt Calhoun was LTC George A Custer's & Capt Tom Custer's brother-in-law.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn L Company was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Galvan was killed.

Two days after the battle burial details found most of L Company in the areas of what became known as Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Galvan's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
