Corporal French enlisted into the US Army on January 22, 1872 in Brooklyn NY. His listed civilian occupation was painter. He was described as 5'6", hazel eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion.

On February 18, 1872, French reported for duty at Rutherfordton NC & was assigned to C Company, 7th Cavalry. C Company was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient, Capt Tom Custer. Capt Custer was also the brother of LTC George Armstrong Custer. His daily duties were listed as quartermaster laborer. On June 3, 1875, he was promoted to corporal.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn C Company was attached to LTC Custer' battalion. French was killed sometime during the battle.

Several days after the battle burial details found many soldiers from the C Company on what had been the flanks of L Company near Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

It is likely French's unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
