Pvt Farrell enlisted into the army on September 29, 1875, at St Louis MO. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. He was described as 5'8", brown hair, gray eyes, with a fair complexion.

On October 29, 1875, Farrell reported for duty at Ft Tottan, Dakota Territory & was assigned to E Company 7th US Cavalry.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn E Company was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Farrell was killed during the fighting.

Several days after the battle burial details found the remains of many soldiers from E Company on a slope leading to Last Stand Hill & on Last Stand Hill.

Lakota/Cheyenne accounts of the fighting & later battlefield excavations revealed evidence that E Company had conducted what appeared to be a well organized & hard fought rear guard action towards Last Stand Hill.

It is likely Farrell's unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
