Orville Cope (Orv), teacher, scholar, skeptic, zoomed out of here on April 25, 2016 headed for the universe or universes yet to be discovered.

Orv was born in New York City's Greenwich Village August 30, 1932. Raised in New York, Cleveland, Ohio and San Pedro, California, Orv was blessed with parents who placed great value on education. He graduated from Chadwick School in 1951, from Whittier College in 1955, and a Ph.D in Political Science from the Claremont Graduate University in 1964.

He served on the faculties of Chadwick School (1958-59), Claremont-McKenna College (1962-63) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1963-1970).

In 1970 he began teaching at the College of Idaho where he remained for 28 years until retirement in 1998. He always regarded his teaching at the College of Idaho as a great experience, and he took great pride in his students who ventured into public service, the law, and academe.

Much of his academic research and writing placed emphasis on the role of political elites and elections in participatory democracies in Latin America and Europe. He conducted much of his research in Chile and Brazil in the 1960's and in Spain and the Basque Country in the 1970's. He also made contributions to the study of comparative foreign policies in the 1980's.

Orv was married to Connie Dubis in 1965 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were later divorced. He married Marcy Gould on June 13, 1992 in Boise, which initiated a great adventure into the known and the unknown. Known was the loving compatibility of the two who were committed to one another and to the democratic betterment of the human condition. Unknown was how would they manage their lives in rapidly changing times as retirements approached.

They needn't have worried, Orv and Marcy were serious teachers who decided, in many ways, that a variety of experiences and friends would be the spice of life. They proceeded to build a cabin at Beyond Hope near Lake Pend Oreille where they spent many summers and autumns with friends and visitors. Over the years they traveled to a variety of places with good friends - Northern Italy, England, Western France, Hawaii, Florida, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica among others.

In retirement Orv, ever mindful, embarked anew on the study of Buddhism, wildlife and abstract photography, and the study of various Asian art forms, principally Bonsai, Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, Chinese and Zen brush-painting. He was grateful for the friendship and counsel of his fellow members of the Boise Bonsai Society and Beginner's Mind Sangha of Boise.

Orv received a variety of commendations for his classroom teaching at the college level. The one that he esteemed the most was a Lifetime Achievement Award from his students at The College of Idaho upon his retirement in 1998. It read
"Your legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the students whose lives you have changed by challenging us to be better than we ever thought we could be."

Orv is survived by his loving wife, Marcy; son, David; Marcy's children: Susan Beseris and Jon Gould; grandchildren: Mitchell Cope, Christina, Andrea and Michael Beseris; and a great-grandson, Kaimana Purcell.

He was most thankful for his many friends in Boise, Caldwell, Sandpoint and Hope.

In lieu of flowers, you may wish to contribute to the student scholarship funds at the College of Idaho or an organization that contributes to peace and non-violence, e.g., The American Friends Service Committee or another charity of your choice.

Plans for a memorial celebration will be announced at a later date.
