Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, William was not officially declared by the military as being dead until August 10, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Son of William Dallas Cameron, Sr. who resided in East Norwalk, Connecticut.

William served as a Fireman Third Class, U.S.S. Quincy (CA-39), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when the Quincy, in what would be known as The Battle of Savo Island, was attacked by a large Japanese naval force and caught in the crossfire of Japanese ships Aoba, Furutaka, and Tenryū, and was hit heavily and set afire. the Quincy was then hit by two torpedoes from Tenryū, causing severe damage and eventually sank.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
