Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Abie, as one of twelve children, and attended high school in Crete, Nebraska. Joe was united in marriage to Alice Hobza on August 29, 1951, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo, Nebraska. Shortly after, Joe graduated from the University of Nebraska in June of 1953. He and Alice relocated to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he started his career as an assistant county agent. In 1955, Joe became the Burt County Agent and served in this capacity for the next 18 years. He joined the First National Bank in 1972 as an ag loan officer and worked there, off and on, until his retirement in 2012.
Joe was very active in the Tekamah and Burt County communities for a number of years. He enjoyed working with the Burt County Fair Board and was an active Lions Club member. Joe was also an active parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Tekamah, and previously served on the church council.
Joe's love of his family was truly the passion of his life. He would make family gatherings and activities a priority, even up until his last days. His Czech heritage and affection for it were something that he passed along to his children and grandchildren. Joe also loved fishing, gardening, crop touring, and puttering around his vast yard.
