US Senator. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Montana in the United States Senate from 1989 until 2007. After studying Agriculture at the University of Missouri, he served with the United States Marine Corps. He moved to Montana, where he worked initially as a magazine salesman and later became a livestock auctioneer. He went on to a career in radio broadcasting, prior to initiating his political association as Yellowstone County Commissioner in 1986. During his tenure in the Senate, Burns spearheaded efforts to increase the production of domestic energy and the expansion of natural resource development. He served on the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee and the Senate Energy Committee. He died from natural causes.
