Middleburgh- Duane S. Palmer, of Middleburgh, passed away at the Hospice Care Center in Edgewater, FL on January 11, 2014 after a long struggle with kidney failure.
He was born in the town of Broome, now the Parker Farm, on March 26, 1928 and was the son of the late Sheridan and Hilda (Cotton) Palmer.
Duane attended Middleburgh Central School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the transportation division. He later received his high school diploma in 2002 as part of the Operation Recognition, a program designed to honor veterans of World War II. He received a medical discharge due to an injury.
Upon his release from the service, he attended welding school and after completion, he opened an auto body repair shop, which later became an auto parts business.
He married the former Josephine Knafelc in February 1950. Thereafter, they worked together in the business until health problems forced him to close it in 1981. In the sixties, he had built a car crusher and traveled around the county crushing junk cars.
Duane was a charter member of the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp. He was also a member of the Middleburgh Reformed Church.
He enjoyed boating and water skiing, as well as doing anything mechanical, especially machine work.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine and his sister, Kathleen Parker of Middleburgh. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Duane was predeceased by his sisters, Lorene Pickett and Evelyn Garner.
Cremation took place in New Smyrna Beach, FL. A memorial service will be held in Middleburgh in the Spring.
