Dose enlisted into the US Army on January 4, 1870 in Davenport MA. He was described as 5'6", brown hair, gray eyes with a fair complexion.

On July 28, 1870, Dose was assigned to Company I, 3rd US Infantry at Ft Lyon, CO. When his enlistment expired, Dose reenlisted. On February 1, 1875, he was assigned to Company G, 7th US Cavalry at Shreveport LA. His daily duties was bugler.

Company G was commanded by Lt Donald McIntosh. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company G was attached to Reno's Battalion, except for Dose. On that day Dose had been placed on detached duty as LTC George A. Custer's orderly.

Several days after the battle Dose's body was found on a slope near the Little Bighorn River. It was reported that his body had numerous arrows in his back & sides. Lt Charles De Rudio, who had been with Reno's command during the battle, described Dose's body as "much disfigured." And was barley recognizable, except for the stripes on his pants.

It has been speculated that at the time of his death, Dose was either carrying a message from Custer to Maj Reno's command or he was one of the first killed during the retreat from the river.

Dose was likely first buried where his remains were found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass brave on top of Last Stand Hill.

On February 24, 1879, Dose's widow recieved a pension for the loss of her husband.
