Dohman enlisted into the army on August 3, 1866 in Cincinnati OH. His listed civilian occupation was barkeeper. He was described as 5'2", brown hair, blue eyes & a fair complexion.

On September 10, 1866, Dohman reported for duty at Ft Riley KS & was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry. His daily duties were listed as tailor. Between September 25, 1868 to October 23, 1868, Dohman was hospitalized in Ft Dodge KS for a case of veneral disease.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's headquarters group. Dohman was killed sometime during the fighting.

For many years some historians believed Company F had been held in reserve & did not engage in much of the fighting. Recent excavations have revealed evidence of heavy fighting in the area of Company F's last known positions on Last Stand Hill and the slope leading up from the Little Bighorn River to the Hill.

It is likely Dohman's unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
