Davis enlisted into the US Army for five years on December 19, 1874, in St Louis, MO. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. Davis was described as 5'6", gray eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion.

On February 8, 1875, Davis reported for duty at Opelika, Alabama & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry.

On February 25, 1875, Davis was listed as a deserter. He was apprehended 3 days later. At a general court martial Davis was sentenced six months confinement & a loss of pay.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Davis was killed sometime during the fighting.

After the battle the remains of many soldiers from Company E were found in the area between the Little Bighorn River & the base of the Last Stand Hill.

The final resting place of 28 bodies from Company E has become a somewhat of a battlefield mystery. Reportedly a burial party found the bodies two days after the battle in what is called the Deep Ravine. They reported burying the bodies where they were found in the ravine. Recent excavations have found no evidence of any human remains or battle related artifacts in Deep Ravine. It is now speculated that the bodies may have been seen in a depressed area at the foot of Last Stand Hill & not Deep Ravine.

Davis' unidentified remains were likely first buried where they were found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

Lakota/Cheyenne accounts of the battle & later battlefield excavations have revealed that Company E appeared to have conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action from the Little Bighorn River towards Last Stand Hill.

In July 1882, Davis' mother received a pension for the loss of her son.
