Bert Herrold Lincoln

Many of us knew Bert as the hunched over, little man who traveled around our valley for many years. For the past two years he had been in the care of the Skilled Nursing Facility at our local hospital. Many thanks to the staff for loving him and making his final days comfortable.
Bert was a man who had no family, but treated everyone he knew like they were his family. He could melt your heart with that dopey smile of his. He never met anyone he wasn't willing to help.
Back in the early '60s Bert was in a severe car accident while serving our country in the Navy. He spent over a year in recovery and that accident left him slightly disabled. He was retrained in civil engineering, but spent most of his adult life doing odd jobs or working as a groundskeeper for various churches.
Even at 80 years old, he still had the desire to work and be useful to his community, despite his frail condition. Bert's desire to serve others came from his love of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He knew the importance of a relationship with God and shared how great God is with others, even near the end of his life here.
Bert would want everyone to know that he is now waiting for the rest of us to join him in the presence of the Lord. The last reading that he did in his daily devotional was about comfort:
"If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me fast." It also read: The comforting love of God enfolds me, and I am at peace.
Bert left this world in the peace of sleep and is now in the peace of his heavenly Father's arms...You will be missed old man...We love you.
"I give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and will glorify Your name forever." Psalm 86:12.
A graveside service at Kern River Valley Cemetery will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, 2006 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Bert's name to the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation.
